About

Hello!

I’m Kaoru Ohtake and I am a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist accredited by the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP).

My Background

I have delivered Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help people who struggle with depression and anxiety within the NHS since 2014.

I grew up in Tokyo, Japan, and moved to the UK in 2004 to study psychology. I completed a BA in Psychology at Winchester and an MSc in Psychological Research Methods at Birkbeck College, London. After this, I worked for various learning disability and mental health projects across London before becoming a CBT therapist.

I completed a PG Cert in Low Intensity Psychological Interventions and subsequently a PGDip in Psychological Interventions (CBT) to qualify as a BABCP-accredited CBT therapist. I have taken several clinical and managerial roles within an NHS talking therapy service based in Surrey.

I have a range of interest areas outside of work: I’m not a natural mathematician at all but I find maths and science (especially physics and biology) fascinating. I like art and craft: I have done drawing and I enjoy visiting museums and galleries to learn how people have expressed their thoughts and emotions in their artwork. I can’t play instruments that well but I like music, anything from classical to punk. I like history: visiting castles and historic houses is a fascinating time-travelling experience. I never used to but for the last 10 years I have been running (not competitively!) – I do believe in the positive effects of physical movement and exercise on wellbeing.

Being able to go on a collaborative journey towards better wellbeing with someone through CBT is hugely important to me. I hope to provide a space for exploration and discovery so you will have a greater confidence in living your life fully in your chosen direction.
